There’s a saying in the music industry especially, “You have to fake it until you make it,” and in some instances sure, fake it, but in the music industry you will be EATEN ALIVE! First you’ll be eaten by the industry and then the fans who have not filters and spare no feelings. It’s not about faking anything but bringing your rawest self and letting others feel it. You can’t fake sing, at least most of the time and you sure as hell cant fake rap, you will be blasted and that’s something that will follow you FOREVER. Fake it until you make it is surely a sure way of embarrassing yourself and making your craft fallacious.
A misconception about the music industry is that everyone has everything when they start–LIE! Many major artists stayed on their hustle and perfected their crafts for years which ultimately led them to success; of course perfection of craft and getting a “break” from someone. The “breaks” are sometimes by chance but in the industry of today chance is something made by these Indie Hustlers. They have to learn very quickly in order to get around and be known. The first step in learning quick is to trust their very own dopeness within. Without self awareness and love how will anyone make it in such a dirty game like that of the music industry.
Fake it until you make it was a great start but at some point self has to kick in. Marva Collins said it best “Trust yourself. Think for yourself. Act for yourself. Speak for yourself. Be yourself. Imitation is suicide, ” and this is the best advice I can give and/or pass on to future artists in any genre of music. Don’t worry about trying to fit in, you don’t want to. If you’re just like everyone who is already in the game, then why would you be soo appealing to anyone? Don’t be a fool, open your eyes, and see your worth–it’s not behind the shadow of ANY artists that have come before you. Pave your own road and see how the world loves you for you and not because you’re like this person or the next. By all means I am not saying don’t have positive affirmations that push you to your success, but have some heart and do you. This indeed is the truth behind Faking it until you make it–DON’T!
